StretchMarks:
THE CAUSE Stretch marks develop when you gain weight rapidly over a short period. This can be attributed to pregnancy, puberty, excessive muscle growth due to training, genetics or even underlying health conditions. Dr Noon Moti-Joosub, a dermatologist from Laserdem, says the earlier you treat stretch marks, the better, as long as you bear in mind that certain treatments aren’t safe to use during pregnancy and lactation. Check with your doctor first.
THE PREVENTION Stay active so that you don’t gain weight too fast, even during pregnancy. Drink plenty of water to keep the skin hydrated from the inside and maintain a balanced diet including vitamin E-rich foods, such as nuts, seeds, avocados and broccoli. Exfoliate your skin regularly so that moisturising oils and creams can penetrate better. Exfoliate using a normal scrub or practise dry-brushing, a technique which includes using a natural-fibre brush to improve circulation and remove dead skin cells. Make sure your skin’s always well moisturised and focus on areas that are prone to stretch marks, such as the stomach, thighs, buttocks and the backs of the legs.
THE PROCEDURES Dr Moti-Joosub names three treatments that reduce stretch marks. The first is carboxytherapy, a minimally invasive procedure which involves injecting small amounts of carbon dioxide into the skin. This causes the blood supply to increase in that particular area, reducing stretch marks. Pulsedye laser targets blood vessels and is useful on newer, red stretch marks, while fractionated laser – targeted specifically at older stretch marks that haven’t responded to treatment – blends the stretch marks into the skin, making them less visible.
