Soft tissue fillers are injectable gels used to temporarily ‘fill in’ lines and wrinkles, and restore lost volume.  A few well-placed injections can help erase years from your face and most people will never know you’ve had any help. Various fillers (e.g. Restylane®, JUVÉDERM® Perlane®) are available and your doctor will help choose the best one for you. Areas that are typically treated include frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines), the deep lines between your nose and lips – ‘smile lines’ (naso-labial lines), sleep lines, cheek wrinkles, jowls, under eye hollows, lip enhancement, back of hands, décolletage and hollow cheeks.

  • What specific indication is Restylane® filler used for?

    It enhances your skin’s own stocks of hyaluronic acid, directly adding volume to either soften the signs of ageing or enhance your features.

  • What specific indication is Perlane® filler used for?

    It has larger gel particles and is intented to be injected deeper within the skin.

  • What is hyaluronic acid (HA)?

    Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in all mammals that helps to hydrate and add volume to your skin. Youthful skin is rich in hyaluronic acid. As we age, the distribution and function of hyaluronic acid in our skin gradually changes, leading to the characteristic signs of ageing.

  • What is cross-linked hyaluronic acid?

    ‘Uncross-linked’ hyaluronic acid in its natural form is in a liquid state. ‘Cross-linking’ is the process through which hyaluronic acid is made into a gel product that can be injected into the skin for long-lasting results.

  • What can I expect during the treatment?

    Using a fine needle, the administering doctor will gently injected the gel filler into the skin.

  • Is the treatment painful?

    Injections may cause some discomfort during and after the injection. A topical anaesthetic may be applied to the area before treatment area to minimise discomfort. Dental blocks may also be used.

  • How long does treatment usually take?

    Typically the injection process takes 15 minutes.

  • Does the correction last forever?

    No, the correction is temporary; therefore, touch-up injections as well as repeat injections are usually needed to maintain optimal corrections.

  • How long do results last?

    The effects of fillers are long lasting but not permanent.  Duration of results is dependant on many factors including such as skin type, lifestyle, age, the degree of patient expectation the injection technique. Generally fillers last up to a year – some even as long as 18 months. Lip enhancement generally requires a follow up after 6 months

  • Is there any downtime with Soft tissue fillers?

    You can expect temporary injection site reactions i.e. slight redness, swelling, pain, tenderness, itching and lumps/bumps, bruising, itching, and discoloration. Discomfort is mild and generally disappears after a few days.

  • What are the side effects?

    As with all skin injection procedures there is a risk of infection. The doctor may inject into a blood vessel, which can bruise the skin.

  • Can people with different skin tones / colours be treated with Fillers?

    JUVÉDERM® injectable gel is the first FDA-approved hyaluronic acid dermal filler that has proven its safety and effectiveness in persons of colour. Studies with JUVÉDERM® showed no increased risk of hyper-pigmentation or hypertrophic scarring in patients of colour.

  • Are there any precautions or contraindications with Fillers?

    Fillers should not be used by people with bleeding disorders.  Injections should not be made anywhere except the skin or just under the skin.  Fillers should not be used by people with a known allergy to lidocaine. Areas to be avoided: skin sores, pimples, rashes, hives, cysts, or infections.

    Products or medication used to thin the blood or prevent clotting like Omega 3, Arnica, Asprin etc should be avoided before being injected.

    Pregnant, breastfeeding or patients under 18 years, should not use injectable fillers.
