  • Gentle skin cleansing before laser treatment

Preparing your skin for a laser appointment is not about making it “squeaky clean.” Laser devices work best when the treatment area is free of makeup, sunscreen, oil and surface grime, while the skin barrier remains calm. A gentle pre-treatment cleanse removes what should be removed without adding irritation that could make the session uncomfortable or interfere with recovery.

Think of cleansing as preparation, not a treatment of its own. The routine differs for laser hair removal, pigmentation work, skin tightening and fractional resurfacing, so your clinician’s instructions take priority. In Australia’s high-UV environment, where a Bondi beach day can leave visible tan lines, sun protection and a settled skin condition matter as much as the cleanser.

    Why a clean canvas matters

Residual foundation can mask the skin and absorb laser energy in unpredictable ways. SPF makeup, tinted moisturisers and mineral powder are especially important to clear from the area, while oil-based products may migrate into follicles or remain on the surface during treatment. A mild wash helps the practitioner assess colour, texture and redness accurately before adjusting settings.

Over-cleansing creates the opposite problem. Rubbing, hot water, exfoliating gloves and harsh wipes can leave the skin warm, dry or sensitive. That temporary roughness may make your skin look more reactive than usual, and it can make numbing cream sting when it is applied. The goal is clean without compromised, so use a cleanser that supports the barrier rather than stripping it.

A simple cleanse also gives you time to notice how your skin behaves. If a product causes burning, a rash or persistent dryness, flag it before the appointment instead of disguising it with makeup. This is useful in Melbourne, where winter air-conditioning and central heating can make skin dry, and in Brisbane, where humidity encourages heavier products that may congest the skin.

Choose a cleanser that respects your skin

A fragrance-free, pH-balanced cleanser is a sensible start. Choose a cream, lotion or non-foaming gel according to what your skin already tolerates. “Gentle” matters more than a foam label: the final rinse should leave skin comfortable, not tight, and the product should not smell strongly of perfume or leave a film.

If you use a cleansing balm or oil to remove makeup, wash off the residue with a second, mild cleanser rather than scrubbing it away. Avoid cleansing brushes, abrasive mitts and scrubs on the treatment area. Cleansing gloves add friction, so keep them away from active skin.

Patch testing a new face wash for 24 to 48 hours is sensible if your skin is sensitive or the product contains active acids. Introduce one new product at a time and note any reaction for your consultation. Ask the treating team for advice tailored to the particular laser and your skin type.

Prepare your skin in the days before

For the few days before your appointment, simplify the routine. A gentle cleanse, bland moisturiser and daily broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen are enough for most people. Remove makeup promptly each evening. This gives you a useful trial run, so you know the cleanser will not trigger dryness on treatment day.

Avoid deliberately exfoliating, using a strong peel or applying potent active ingredients close to the session unless your clinician tells you to. Retinoids, AHAs, BHAs and benzoyl peroxide can increase sensitivity, and whether to pause them depends on the procedure. Never stop prescribed treatment without asking both the prescriber and laser practitioner.

Self-tan deserves special attention. Laser pigmentation treatments may be unsuitable over fresh artificial colour, and self-tan can affect how the skin and device settings are assessed. Tell the clinic when you last applied it. Swimmers at Gold Coast leisure centres may use tinted sunscreen regularly, making it useful to disclose products they consider simply self-care.

Medical information should come from a qualified clinical source. Search results can surface unrelated commercial or gaming pages, such as a casino compressed mode guide, which has nothing to do with skin safety; never use it to decide how to prepare. A good clinic provides written instructions, identifies who performs the treatment and explains what to do if your skin changes.

    Your morning-before treatment routine

On the day, wash with lukewarm water and a small amount of the cleanser you have already tested. Let the skin dry naturally, then apply only products your appointment instructions permit. Avoid foundation, concealer, brow tint, mascara, deodorant on the area and fragranced products. If unsure whether something counts as makeup, ask the clinic.

Do not shave right before a hair-removal session unless your practitioner tells you to. When shaving is required, it is usually done close enough to the appointment to remove visible hair while allowing follicles to settle. Avoid depilatory cream, waxing and plucking in the instructed window, as shaving too closely can create abrasions and these methods can increase sensitivity.

Bring a clean, soft face cloth, SPF 50+ sunscreen and any approved products. Sunscreen may need to stay off the treatment area, but it remains important for exposed skin before and after treatment. Water and a simple moisturiser can help during a long session. Comfortable clothing also helps when treating areas such as legs, underarms or the back.

    Avoid common pre-treatment mistakes

The most common error is assuming more exfoliation produces a better result. Cleansing should remove what is on the skin, not polish away healthy surface cells. Changing the entire skincare routine a week before the appointment is another mistake. If a new product causes a reaction, you may have less time for the irritation to settle.

Do not ignore cuts, active eczema, cold sores, tattoos or recently tanned skin when checking in. Mention them before the session starts. The practitioner may need to adjust the area, postpone treatment or recommend another approach. Honest disclosure supports safer care.

Aftercare starts on the same day. Wash the area as directed, use a soothing, fragrance-free moisturiser and protect treated skin from heat and sun. Avoid gym sweats, saunas, hot showers and chlorinated water until the skin settles, particularly in a hot Brisbane summer or after a Gold Coast pool session. If your clinician plans a chemical peel after laser, follow the specific chemical peel after laser sequence rather than choosing products independently.

    Book your pre-treatment consultation

In Australia, elective cosmetic laser treatment is generally not covered by Medicare, so compare the total price, number of sessions, device and included aftercare rather than a headline offer. Some clinics use packages; others charge per appointment. For treatment in Australia, check that the practitioner is registered with AHPRA and ask about the device’s status on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods.

Book a pre-treatment consultation if you are uncertain about your skin, previous reactions or the products you use. It is also worthwhile if you are travelling to South Africa for treatment, since the clinician can assess your skin before you travel. “Book in” the appointment with enough time to adjust products only under professional guidance, and obtain the instructions in writing.

Laserderm provides information on aesthetic treatments, clinic branches and ways to contact its doctors for people considering treatment in South Africa. Review the available procedures through Laserderm clinic information, send your questions and arrange a consultation with the team rather than relying on a generic internet checklist. Book a consultation and choose a gentle routine you have already tested.
